How to Record Competency for an AI-Assisted Laboratory Workflow
Create role-specific competency evidence for AI-assisted laboratory work while preserving qualified human oversight.
Define competency for the actual role
List the decisions, data, controls and escalation steps assigned to each role. Separate awareness training from authorisation to perform or approve a task.
Qualified laboratory leadership must define competency against the validated workflow, applicable quality system and current procedure.
Assess realistic tasks
Use controlled examples that represent normal work, missing context, unusual output and system failure. Ask the learner to identify when the AI-assisted result cannot be accepted.
Do not use identifiable or sensitive records outside an approved environment. Synthetic or authorised training data should follow the organisation's governance controls.
Record observable evidence
Capture the procedure version, assessor, date, task, evidence reviewed and outcome. Record limitations or supervised conditions rather than reducing competency to attendance.
Keep the record traceable to the individual and role while applying appropriate access, retention and privacy controls.
Test escalation and override behaviour
Assess whether the person can pause the workflow, preserve evidence, notify the correct reviewer and use the approved fallback. Fluent output must not discourage escalation.
Human oversight remains required wherever the procedure, regulation or professional responsibility requires it.
Control authorisation after assessment
Link successful assessment to the permitted task and system access. Do not grant broad permissions merely because a person completed general AI training.
Role changes, procedure updates or material model changes may require reassessment under formal change control.
Review competency over time
Use incidents, exceptions, audit findings and observed practice to decide when refresher training or reassessment is needed. Avoid inventing a fixed interval that ignores risk and local requirements.
BioInsight Labs can support controlled operational records, but qualified professionals remain accountable for validation, authorisation and laboratory decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Is course attendance proof of competency? Not by itself. Who can assess staff? The organisation must appoint appropriately qualified assessors. Does AI remove professional accountability? No; authorised humans remain responsible for decisions and escalation.
